Kings Dominion & Soak City Review

My family of 5 visited Kings Dominion amusement park and Soak City Water Park in Doswell, VA on the east coast and had such an amazing time dining, riding water slides, live shows, relaxing in the lazy rider, and splashing around to beat the summer heat. The best part of Soak City was that in the 20-acres of water based fun, there are your own thrills awaiting no matter what your risk and thrill tolerance is! As a parent of three small children that planning a water park trip can be overwhelming .

I will share tips for packing for the Soak City Water park at Kings Dominion, preparing for your first time visit, what attractions to check out while at Soak City, and information about how to visit Kings Dominion and have the best day without spending a ton of money!

What should I know before arriving at Kings Dominion Soak City?

  • Wear comfortable clothing.  If you want to save time or know you are heading right to Soak City, then you can wear your bathing suits under your clothes.  We opted to change in Soak City water park at Kings Dominion, since we were planning on spending time in the theme park too but it's totally up to your family’s preferences.  There are lockers and spacious changing areas and restrooms located all over Soak City to change if needed.

  • Stay hydrated - bring your refillable Kings Dominion season pass cup or grab a refillable cup at any station to refill for free all day.  Chances are you are coming on a hot day to Soak City, and you want to be prepared. You can refill the Kings Dominion cup every 15 minutes.

  • Be prepared for a lot of walking!  Soak City is located towards the back of Kings Dominion theme park, so if you have little ones you will absolutely want to bring your wagon / stroller to help with the exhaustion after a day in the sun.  You can also rent a stroller from Kings Dominion as well which is an awesome option if you dont have one to bring.  You can see the Kings Dominion park map here, which will give you a good overview of how to get to Soak City once entering the park.

  • Have water shoes for your family, especially children.  The concrete gets HOT walking to and from water play and rides on late summer days. Pick up a pair of cheap water shoes for them to wear around the Soak City waterpark.  Also, then they can have these on for bathroom trips too!

  • Have a water safe phone pouch so your phone can go with you around the water park for photos and videos!   This phone water safe phone pouch is one of the best things I have ever purchased and it is worth every penny!

  • Have a portable phone charger with you.  That way you can use your phone and not worry about it dying while having fun at the Soak City park!

What are the best attractions in Kings Dominion Soak City for Preschoolers and younger children?

Coconut Shores is the all-new redesigned area of Soak City and is my favorite part of the water park at Kings Dominion! Coconut Shores features three new additions to Soak City including Lighthouse Landing, Sand Dune Lagoon, and Beach Street. There was TONS of shaded space throughout the Soak City area which was great as a mom who often needed to nurse a younger sibling or let them nap while another sibling still wanted to play.  You can find a list of all Soak City attractions with height requirements, if you want more details about what your child(ren) can do to plan ahead.

  • Lighthouse Landing at Soak City

Lighthouse Landing is home to an oversized wading pool and provides endless opportunities for fun for the entire family.  Your children will love the play structure with water slides and interactive water fun. The new multi-level play structure will feature two gigantic tipping buckets and more than 200 interactive features, multiple slides, and plenty of climbing and exploring.  My children could have played on Lighthouse Landing ALL DAY!  All 3 of my children enjoyed playing in Lighthouse Landing, 45-foot multi-level play structure, together.  There are so many interactive parts to this attraction that everyone was happy in one place, and that is not an easy feat as families with multiple children will know and understand.

  • Sand Dune Lagoon at Soak City

This was a favorite of mine as a parent because I could easily see all of my children in one place.  There is a staff member stationed at the entrance and exit of this attraction checking for life vests for younger children that are available before entering.  Little ones will love jumping waves and making a splash in Sand Dune Lagoon, located directly to the left of Lighthouse Landing. With a water depth of only 36 inches, this mini-wave pool is a great way to refresh in the water at the edge or hop in all the way!

What are the best attractions in Kings Dominion Soak City for Tweens / Teens?

If you are looking for big-kid fun or adult thrill water rides, the following water slides and attractions will be right up your alley!  During weekends especially long lines can form for the water slides so having a fast lane pass is a great idea!

Hurricane Heights is home to 3 water slide attractions.

  • Aqua Blast - get ready to twist and spiral through 4 360 degree loops on 449 feet of water slide.  End by getting dumped into a pool of water!

  • Paradise Plunge - choose from 3 chambers and wait for the floor to drop out from below you to vertical free fall through loops and curves.

  • Thunder Falls - single rider inner tube ride and water slide fun through loops and turns.

Pipeline peak is home to four enclosed water slides that all begin at the top of a 77 foot tall platform.

  • power plunge and night slider are both slides that launch from the highest platform and rip slide & turbo twister are inner tube slides that begin at a 45 foot height platform!

How much time do I need for Soak City?

Your family could easily spend all day just inside of Soak City. The area is absolutely massive spanning 20 acres.  This is why I highly recommend Season Passes.  Your family doesn't have to feel pressured to do it all in one visit, you can break it up into multiple visits all season long. Why contain the Soak City fun to just one day if you do not have to!  I definitely recommend for families taking younger children to Kings Dominion to decide whether you want to do Soak City or just the theme park side of Kings Dominion prior to visiting. If you have a Pre-k pass or a season pass and can go multiple times, pick one part of the Kings Dominion Park to visit.  It helps with packing items for the trip and allows you to slow down and enjoy the rides / attractions more vs rushing to try to fit it all in.

What are the Dining Options in Kings Dominion Soak City?

I was so impressed with the new and improved dining options in Soak City.  Guests will love the new food truck-themed dining experience.  At Beach Street, guests can enjoy family favorites from four different food trucks including flat bread pizzas at Pizza Paradise, healthy bowls at Beachside Bowls, fish and chips at The Captain’s Catch. Guests age 21 and older can also grab beverages at the Sand Bar.  As a parent of children who always want to eat various things I was so impressed that we could all sit in one area and grab food from different trucks. It made it so easy to meet everyone’s needs in my family easily. We refueled at Beach Street and then hopped back in the pool for tons of fun.

Should I Rent a Cabana While at Soak City?

We really enjoyed having the cabana while we were at Soak City.  We were there on a really hot day and having a dedicated space to meet back at in the shade was well worth it.  The cabana included sunscreen, towels, water bottles in a refrigerator, a locked box for wallets and possessions as well as a TV and sofas and a table with chairs to relax and have a meal together on. There are various cabana rental options throughout Soak City, that you can read about starting at 129$.  If you are planning on spending an entire day at Soak City, having a cabana would be a really awesome option.  Another great amenity of having the cabana was the staff that were available to help order food and answer and questions we had.

Do I need to bring my own towels to Soak City?

Yes, towels are not provided for you while at Kings Dominion’s Soak City.

Do I need to bring my own life vest to Soak City?

Is Soak City in Kings Dominion open for the same hours as the theme park?

No, hours and times may vary. Please check this site to find the hours for the date you are planning to attend.  What I loved about the staggered open and close times of Soak City is that it allows you to head home earlier with younger children who need to get to bed or still have a few hours left in the park to ride a few more rides before heading home.  This helps break up the walk back to the car as well for tired little feet!

If I have visited Soak City before, should I visit again?

ABSOLUTELY! Kings Dominion has added so many new structures and attractions to Soak City in the recent years. Soak City is a 20 acre water park packed with so many opportunities for water fun for the whole family.  You could go to Kings Dominions Soak City weekly all summer and not run out of water fun.  In 2021 Soak City and Kings Dominion opened up a new and expanded water park area that your family will absolutely LOVE.

Is There a Map of Kings Dominion Soak City?

Yes, here is a digital map of Kings Dominion and Soak City. I highly recommend downloading the Kings Dominion app which will help you navigate the park, find the closest restroom, and find foot and wait times for attractions.

There is so much to do and so much to see at Kings Dominion for guests of all ages. Whether you go once per season or once per week, your family will have so much fun making memories that will last a lifetime.  I cannot wait to hear what your family loved most about their visit to Soak City at Kings Dominion!
